Chapter 8: ARCHIVE

In Brief: The MCs travel to the Archives to figure out what the hell's going on. However they get in, they'll find allies here who support the Resistance. They need to talk with Enki to get the full story. It's a shame Kano's touring this facility to show off his new-found power and importance.

Scenes

  1. Take the Subway to the Archives (cutscene or minigame:search)
  2. Enter the Archives (combat or minigame:sneak)
  3. Find Enki (minigame:search)
  4. Oops - it's Kano again! (boss fight)
  5. Talk to Enki (conversation) (might happen before Kano)
  6. Talk amongst each other (conversation)

Minigames

Take the Subway to the Archives: Search
If power was not restored to the Subway, the MCs still need to fumble their way around in the tunnels to find their destination.

Success: The MCs find the path quickly. Each one of them may stash a card.
First consequences: The MCs find the way to the Archives. No other effect.
Second consequences: The MCs reach the Archives, but they're tired. Flip the first card straight into the discard during the Sneak minigame there.
Third consequences: The MCs reach the Archive but they're disoriented. They each discard their best two cards when they reload for the first fight in the Archive.
Final consequences: The MCs are unable to find the path to the Archive. The players must spend 2 Patience to check a strategy guide.

Enter the Archives: Sneak
The entrance is well-guarded - why not try to sneak through the steam tunnels?

Better than a Straight: The MCs find Enki on their way in! They can skip the Search minigame that would normally be required to find her.
Success: The MCs make it in. No other effect.
Three of a kind: The MCs make it in, but start at the opposite end of the building from Enki. The CPU can swap the position of two face-down cards three times during the Search minigame.
Two pair: The MCs are caught and must fight instead. Use the Archive Entrance battlefield.
One pair: The MCs are caught and must fight instead. Use the Archive Entrance battlefield, but add one to the number of of each type of mob appearing.
Ace/Joker: The MCs are caught and electrocuted in a trap. Use Patience to reload.

Find Enki: Search
Enki isn't the easiest to find, especially when you're trying to stay hidden.

Success: The MCs find Enki right away. Each one of them may stash a card.
First consequences: The MCs find Enki before Kano arrives. No other effect.
Second consequences: The MCs find Enki but need to fight Kano right away. Treat this as an escort mission with Enki. Kano and his mobs will not attack Enki directly, but he might catch her with Countdown Crash.
Third consequences: The MCs find Enki but need to fight Kano right away. He ignores her and focuses on them. The MCs must each discard their best two cards after they reload for the fight.
Final consequences: The MCs find Enki, but Kano downs her right in front of them. They have no opportunity to talk to her. If he has the opportunity during the ensuing boss fight, he will use an action to kill her. The players may want to reload.

Reward

After defeating Kano, all MCs have their Max HP and Damage raised once.

After talking with each other about what they've seen here, what they've done for the Resistance so far, and perhaps other topics, each MC gains a special Interrupt Charge condition. Each MC gains the condition below in addition to the ones they already have.

  • Protagonist: The first time you are downed during a boss fight, charge your Interrupt all the way and restore yourself to 1 HP.
  • Sidekick: The first time the Protagonist is downed during a boss fight, charge your Interrupt all the way.
  • Comic Relief: In a boss fight, the first time you insult the boss, cut your HP in half as they backhand you. Charge your Interrupt all the way.
  • Wallflower: The first time in any fight that you are only MC not downed, charge your Interrupt all the way. Gain the Armored status, lock your status byte if you want, and raise your damage for the rest of the fight.
  • Badass: In a non-boss fight, once per chapter, you can say "You go ahead. I'll handle this." The MCs move on to the next scene, and you join them at the next fight or minigame. Do not change your charge meter.
  • Mysterious Stranger: Once per disk, you can reveal a strong past connection with any boss. When you enter a battle with that boss, charge your Interrupt all the way.

About an hour after Kano escapes, there is the sound of an explosion from near the center of the city. The subway tunnels have been collapsed, blocking access to the Towers at the center of the City.

If the MCs chose the "combat" option when entering the archives, there will be repercussions for them in the next two chapters - a reward from the Bikers in Chapter 9, but extra opposition to face in Chapter 10.

Miniature: If the players have 1 Patience left as they enter the Archive, they can spend it to find the item "1/30 Scale Satoriel"
